Catchment Management Planning in Lokok and Lokere, Karamoja & Teso regions, North Eastern Uganda
On October 13, 2016 we informed you about the process RAIN (a brand of Aidenvironment) has been supporting since June 2016: planning how water and related resources should be managed in an integrated way, at catchment level, and supporting the establishment of institutions (Catchment Management Organizations, CMOs) to oversee and coordinate implementation of the plans.
The process, implemented by RAIN, Cordaid, Acacia Water, Wetlands International and partners, is nearly completed. Through a stakeholder-driven process, social and environmental issues/challenges the area faces at present and in the future were determined, as well as solutions (also called “options”) to those issues. CMOs have been established; their capacity development on different aspects of integrated natural resources management is on-going. Draft Catchment Management Plans have been prepared which stakeholders will approve towards the end of March 2017.

In addition to supporting the other tasks of the process, RAIN has been the lead on the analysis of policy and institutional frameworks, and of options and different development pathways (the “scenarios”). To inform the analysis of options and scenarios RAIN zoned the catchments based on land use, population density, rainfall received, soil type and an indication of water availability based on the number of point water sources. Zoning aids identifying options that respond to specific issues in specific locations in the catchment.
