Embracing Sustainability in Dominican Sugar: A Case Study on Consorcio Azucarero de Empresas Industriales (CAEI)

In June 2016, Bonsucro announced that the Cristóbal Colón mill, owned by Consorcio Azucarero de Empresas Industriales (CAEI), had obtained the first Bonsucro certificate issued in the Dominican Republic meeting sustainability requirements at the farm and mill levels. Little was known about the activities the company undertook to achieve certification and the broader process that contributed to this milestone. In this case study for Bonsucro, Aidenvironment identifies the main improvements made from 2011-2016 and the lessons learned that could inform other sugarcane companies embarking on an improvement path.
