Exploring Water Management Options: First Joint Mission to Benin
Since the beginning of 2019, RAIN is involved as a technical advisor on Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) / Gestion Integree des Ressources en Eau (GIRE) for the Association of Dutch Municipalities / Vereniging Nederlandse Gemeentes (VNG). Within the Omidelta program (funded by the Dutch Embassy in Benin), VNG is responsible for finding solutions for recurring floods in 5 municipalities in the Southern / coastal part of Benin, by developing and implementing 1 practical and visible pilot project per municipality. Turning water problems into income generation activities is another responsibility of VNG.
A first joint mission (VNG, RAIN – Niels Lenderink) to Benin has taken place in February, during which the main problems in each municipality were observed, and if known, local initiatives to fight the floodings were visited. Ideas for practical and visible pilot projects have been exchanged and developed. Next steps will be an inventory of the stakeholders, as well as a cartography of relevant physical and social elements (recurrence floods, soils, vegetation, villages in flooding areas, etc.). Thereafter, designs for infrastructure and actions will be developed in cooperation with the population. The project will continue till end 2020.
