REDD+ Developments in the Guianas

In many tropical countries forests are under great pressure from agricultural expansion, infrastructure development and wood production. Deforestation and forest degradation have become the second largest contributors to worldwide carbon emissions. REDD+ provides a financial incentive for reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, and makes it possible to protect natural forests while fostering sustainable development.
Setting an example for other nations, the Guianas are capitalizing on this opportunity. A joint project of WWF Guianas and Aidenvironment, this brochure provides an insight into the history and present status of REDD+ in Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana, and the numerous activities undertaken in these seemingly similar, yet very different countries.
