To help reduce deforestation worldwide, Aidenvironment and Waxman Strategies are working on a new project funded by Norway’s International Climate and Forest Initiative (NICFI), called “A Global Rapid-Response Deforestation Monitoring System.” The project targets commodity buyers and commodity producers to adopt and implement “no deforestation, no peat, no exploitation” (NDPE) policies. This gets shape by producing high-quality and credible rapid-response deforestation reports to identify near-real time deforestation, as this is happening around the world. The reports will be publicly available in order to increase awareness on the risks and consequences of deforestation in the agri-commodity business.
The project will publish monthly “rapid response briefing” reports linking near-real time deforestation alerts to stakeholders of soy and cattle supply chains. As part of the research process for developing such reports, Aidenvironment has developed a data system to allow for near-real time tracking of deforestation alerts. Our data system includes data on land use change, land ownership, supply chains, corporate structures and other data sets related to the agricultural drivers of deforestation.
