Monitoring and learning

Monitoring systemic change can be complex as these changes generally take time to materialise and are less visible. It is also a challenge to determine the level of contribution, as there can be many other external influencing factors.

Aidenvironment designs monitoring systems and conducts mid-term and final evaluations. We focus on systemic changes and outcome levels. For example, change in behaviour, policies, norms and institutions. Our approach emphasizes evidence-based learning to make recommendations for continuous improvement and systemic change. Monitoring systemic changes is important because these changes have the potential to sustain and scale results within the operations of agricultural commodity producers.

We use a theory-based, mixed methods approach. After having defined systemic impact pathways, we define indicators and main assumption for every step. For every indicator, we define mixed methods to assess change. Finally, we assess the contribution to these changes by the interventions proposed in relation to other influencing factors.
